The U.K. gonorrhea cases hit record high. Because of this, the U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued a warning.
Here's what the health agency suggested to young people, especially college students.
UKHSA Issues Warning as Gonorrhoea Cases in UK Hit Record Levels
According to the Independent UK's latest report, gonorrhea is one of the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that concern the United Kingdom.
This is because gonorrhea cases in the U.K. reached over 82,500 in 2022, a 50% increase compared to the record in 2021.
Based on statistics, there are more than 400 gonorrhea diagnoses each day in the United Kingdom. Individuals who have this disease are usually between 15 to 24 years old.
Health experts said that STIs can be treated with antibiotics in most cases. However, if these diseases are left untreated, patients can suffer serious health issues.
"It is very important to be aware of the risks of catching STIs from condomless sex," stated UKHSA sexually transmitted diseases head Dr. Katy Sinka.
She added that STIs could have serious consequences. Luckily, there are things people can do to reduce their chances of contracting these sexually transmitted diseases.
Dr. Katy said that college students entering universities for the first time or returning can get tested before they start being sexually active.
She encouraged young people to use condoms since these contraceptives are the best defense against STIs.
"If you didn't use one the last time you had sex with a new or casual partner please do get tested even if you are not showing any symptoms, it's free and confidential," explained Sinka.
