New York City authorities have arrested the husband of a Bronx daycare owner where a one-year-old boy died of fentanyl exposure.

Law enforcement personnel said that the fugitive was hunted down in Mexico on Tuesday after spending roughly ten days on the lam. The man was identified as Felix Herrera, who was captured on surveillance video sneaking out of the nursery minutes before first responders found the victim, Nicholas Feliz Dominici, dying.

The U.S. Marshal Service was able to track down Herrera in Texas, where they got a tip that he was hiding south of the border. Mexican authorities were the ones who captured the suspect as they worked with agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Marshals Service.

The 34-year-old fugitive is expected to face extradition to the United States and become the fourth suspect charged in the young boy's tragic death. Authorities also charged 36-year-old Grei Mendez Ventura, Herrera's wife and the owner of the Divino Nino Daycare, and 41-year-old Carlisto Acevedo Brito, Herrera's cousin, as per the New York Post.

Bronx prosecutors charged the suspects with murder, assault, and child endangerment the day after the victim died. Three other children were sickened by fentanyl exposure on Sept. 15. The initial two suspects and a third individual, 38-year-old Renny Antonio Parra Paredes, also face federal drug charges of conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death.v

Authorities noted that the suspects also ran a narcotics mill out of the basement of the daycare center, where they discovered drugs and paraphernalia stashed on top of children's play mats and in two trap doors underneath where the children ate, played, and slept.

Law enforcement sources also noted that Herrera was believed to be the "main player" in the alleged drug operation hidden inside the daycare center. Prosecutors argued that Mendez found the children unresponsive shortly before 2:39 p.m. on Sept. 15 and made three calls before calling police, one to a co-worker and two to her husband.

Fentanyl Exposure

The former chief of operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration, Ray Donovan, noted that Herrera's arrest was made in a significant location. According to CBS News, he added that the suspect has contacts because of his illicit drug activity in Mexico within the Sinaloa cartel.

A New York City grand jury indicted Mendez and Brito after the fentanyl exposure death. Before that decision, the two suspects were both charged in state court with murder, manslaughter, assault, endangering child welfare, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Andres Manuel Aranda, Mendez's defense attorney, said last week that his client will fight the charges against her. He noted that the daycare owner had nothing to do with the case "besides taking care of the kids."

The attorney said that Mendez claims she has no previous knowledge of contraband in the apartment. Aranda added that his client "feels horrible about what happened," adding that she was the one who called 911 to report the incident, said CNN.
