Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott belittled the migrant crisis in New York City during his speech on Wednesday, Sept. 27.
He claimed that the asylum seeker issue in NYC is calm compared to what Texas is experiencing. Here are other things he said.
Texas Governor Belittles NYC Migrant Crisis
The Manhattan Institute hosted a conference around the corner from the Roosevelt Hotel, which is the primary entry point for migrants.
In this event, Abbott was invited. He talked about how NYC's migrant crisis is still better compared to what Texas has to deal with.
"What is going on in New York is calm and organized compared to the real chaos of what we see on the border not every day, but every hour of every day," said the Texas governor.
However, his following statements were not focused on the NYC. Instead, he blamed the migrant issues that New York and Texas are experiencing on U.S. President Joe Biden.
"The challenge that the city of New York and the state of New York are dealing with is caused by one person: Joe Biden," said Gregg Abbott via Spectrum News.
He added that the American leader should not only provide financial assistance to the New York City and NY state but also offer better change in policy.
Aside from this, he also argued that "inhumane" is allow a one-year-old child to die in New York because of fentanyl poisoning.
After sharing his statements, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and other NYC officials retaliated. Adams' offices claimed that Abbott was just using migrants as his political pawns.
NYC officials said that they take pride in providing care and compassion to migrants, which Gregg Abbott lacks. They further stated that if the Texas leader really wants to help in the ongoing asylum seeker issue, he will encourage his Republican colleagues in Congress to work with Joe Biden.
Texas Sends Migrants to NYC
The statements coming from Abbott are quite ironic since the Independent UK reported that Texas has been sending migrants from the southern U.S. border to New York, Chicago, and Washington.
Abbott recently confirmed that he provided bus tickets to around 42,000 asylum seekers so they can go elsewhere and start their new lives.
More than 15,000 of these migrants were sent to New York City in 2022. Meanwhile, the remaining asylum seekers decided to go to other parts of the northeast U.S.
Because of this, numerous Democratic officials complained that they couldn't handle the worsening asylum-seeker crisis in their areas.
