A 40-year-old Michigan man named Robert Wayne Lee, known in his community as the self-styled vigilante pedophile hunter "Boopac Shakur," was shot and killed over the weekend after confronting two teenagers.
According to a statement from the Oakland County sheriff's office, the altercation happened late Friday night (September 29) involving Lee and two teenagers, aged 17 and 18, at a restaurant in Pontiac. He allegedly accused the older teenager of being a pedophile and punched him. The teen who was hit pulled out a knife, while the younger one shot Lee with a pistol seven times, police further alleged.
The man was taken to hospital but later died of his injuries, while the suspects fled the scene but were arrested Saturday afternoon (September 30).
Police have not released the names of the teenagers.
Lee Mistakenly Alleged Arrested Teens as Predators, Police Say
Police further alleged that the teenager Lee accused of being a sexual predator, while arrested for the murder, was "mistakenly identified" as such.
"While we certainly understand his desire to hold child predators accountable, many times well-intentioned individuals who engage in this don't know the standard of evidence required for convictions and often underestimate the potential for violence confronting a suspected predator," Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.
Despite some unfounded allegations, a police department spokesperson told CNN that at least one of Lee's endeavors led to a former police officer facing charges.
Lee was known for publishing videos of his exploits to over 11,000 Facebook followers and over 45,000 on Instagram. Some of the videos appear to show him engaging in violent confrontations with alleged perpetrators.
