A Taco Bell employee in Charlotte, North Carolina has been shot over the weekend by a disgruntled customer who allegedly did not receive the correct amount of change for his payment.
Local authorities in Charlotte responded to a shooting in the food chain Saturday night (September 30). When they arrived at the scene, they found the victim, who has not yet been named by police, sustaining two gunshot wounds.
The food chain worker was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
Gunman Identified, Arrested
Witnesses to the shooting claimed that a 67-year-old man named Doll McLendon, grew aggressive in the drive-thru line after receiving his order and counting his change. He reportedly parked the car before entering the restaurant and began shooting.
McLendon then fled the scene but was tracked down due to license plate tracking and surveillance footage from the restaurant.
He subsequently surrendered in his home and was charged with assault with a deadly weapon "intent to kill inflicting serious injury and discharging a weapon into occupied property."
"Words were not being used and someone turned to a violent action with a gun," Major Torri Tellis of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a news conference. "At this point, we can't say what actually caused this."
Taco Bell eventually told USA Today in a statement that the company was "shocked" to hear of the incident and confirmed that the franchise owner in Charlotte was "working with the local authorities in their investigation and will be offering support to all team members present."
