The NYPD has announced plans to increase patrols throughout New York City this weekend in anticipation of mass protests and the potential for violence resulting from the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

An internal department memo obtained by the New York Daily News revealed that NYPD officers have been told to be ready for immediate deployment and to carry out their duties while inconsistent. The order was issued on Wednesday, according to New York Daily News.

Warning of NYPD Officer Shortage Amid Escalating Threats

Former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton has issued a warning about the New York Police Department (NYPD) facing a notable shortage of officers during an increase in potential threats to both the city and the United States.

He notes that since he departed from the top position in 2016, the NYPD has seen a reduction of approximately 3,000 to 4,000 officers, bringing the force down to about 33,000, compared to 36,000 to 37,000 during his tenure.

Two vital NYPD units specializing in counterterrorism, the Critical Response Command (CRC) and the Strategic Response Group (SRG), have seen significant reductions in staffing. The CRC protects against terrorist-related threats, while the SRG specializes in crowd control and demonstrations.

Both units have undergone substantial downsizing, which Bratton attributes to the City Council's reluctance to hire more officers. The former NYPD Commissioner contends that the City Council's anti-police attitude has deterred them from requesting additional officers in the city's budget, leading to the understaffing of the police force.

Consequently, the existing officers are forced to work extensive overtime to compensate. In trying to enhance security, the New York Police Department (NYPD) has taken decisive action by implementing measures that require all officers to report in uniform.

This directive leaves no room for excuses or shift changes, ensuring a consistent and ready presence within the department. The requirement will continue to be in effect "until further notice," according to officials. In a statement, the city's highest-ranking law enforcement official highlighted the crucial role of the CRC and SRG units in the prevailing security conditions.

In 2015, a set of units was launched, each demanding the expertise of 600 extensively trained officers equipped for counterterrorism operations. These units have a wide range of responsibilities, such as safeguarding synagogues and the United Nations, along with their involvement in high-profile events.

Bratton emphasizes the rising threats, including the potential for lone-wolf terrorism and the growth of terrorism from various Islamic-inspired organizations, such as Al Qaeda, ISIS, Hamas, and Hezbollah.

Despite the NYPD's formidable challenges, he asserts that the department remains strong but desperately needs additional staffing, according to New York Post.

New York City Boosts Security Amid Israel-Gaza Conflict Protests

The NYPD has enhanced security in response to ongoing protests and rallies concerning the recent conflict in Israel and Gaza. Fears of potential violence have arisen, prompting an increased police presence at Jewish and Muslim places of worship and schools.

The city's authorities are committed to safeguarding religious institutions and preventing extremist attacks. Morgan Stanley and Google parent Alphabet Inc. have allowed their employees to work from home amid concerns of escalating tensions related to pro-Palestine and pro-Israel rallies.

The New York Police Department has emphasized that the heightened security is aimed at deterring potential violence rather than addressing an immediate threat. Despite the heated emotions associated with recent protests and rallies, the NYPD is focused on maintaining public safety while encouraging people to continue their daily lives.

The ongoing war in Israel and Gaza has sent shockwaves throughout the region and has sparked security concerns on a global scale, especially in cities that are home to sizable Jewish and Muslim communities. With former Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal calling for protests to support Palestinians, the potential for violence and clashes outside Israel and Gaza has become a genuine concern.

The NYPD's challenges underscore the complex balance between ensuring public safety and responding to the changing dynamics of global conflicts and protests, where international events can have repercussions in cities worldwide, Bloomberg Reported.
