Topeka, Kansas, is a community that wants people to migrate there. To that end, it has been providing financial incentives to entice new employees and residents, particularly Latino and immigrant families.
The incentives program, known as Choose Topeka, provides up to $15,000, with a minimum wage requirement of $50,000 per year.
The incentives aren't available to unauthorized immigrants since qualified candidates must have authorization to work in the United States, according to NBC News.
The initiative is sponsored equally by the city and the participating companies, many of whom are hiring Hispanic workers.
The Choose Topeka initiative was introduced in 2019 with the goal of assisting businesses and fostering economic growth.
The initiative has aided in the relocation of approximately 100 people and families to Topeka. It has lately been expanded to provide assistance to veterans, recent Washburn University graduates, and "boomerang" locals who want to move back to the city.
Other Incentives
The city also offers incentives to beginning entrepreneurs and company owners to help them increase their financial performance, ensure the sustainability of their operations, or expand into new markets. According to Israel Sanchez, director of equity and business development at GO Topeka, grants may in some circumstances cover up to 50% of the costs associated with launching a new company.
The quickest and biggest population growth Topeka has seen in ten years occurred between 2021 and 2022 in Shawnee County, where Topeka is situated.
According to the U.S., the county's population has also gotten younger and more diversified. Counting Houses. The county's non-white population increased by about 7 percent, driven mostly by growth in the number of Hispanic and multiracial citizens, while its median age dropped by almost two years to roughly 38.
With 20,000 Latino people, Hispanics are the second-largest ethnic group in Topeka. According to the city, there are around 127,000 people living in Topeka overall.
