Missing Michigan-Flint Student Killed by Ex-Boyfriend
Gina Nicole Bryant, 25, a dedicated student at the University of Michigan-Flint, lost her life to domestic violence. The Macomb County Sheriff's Office reported that her ex-boyfriend tragically killed her 26-year-old, Dr. Justin Wendling, in La Salle, Illinois, on October 13, 2023.
Gina's untimely death sent shockwaves through her community, leaving her friends and family grappling with a profound loss. Gina's best friend, Charlotte Jolly, expressed the family's heartbreak in a Facebook post, saying, "It's with a heavy heart that we write this post.
The family has suffered an unspeakable and tragic loss due to domestic violence." Gina's disappearance raised concern among her co-workers when she failed to return from her lunch break on October 12.
They began receiving unusual text messages from her phone, prompting the Macomb County Sheriff's Office to investigate her whereabouts. What they discovered was a harrowing tale of domestic violence and tragedy.
The investigation revealed that Wendling was waiting for Gina when she returned home for lunch. Surveillance footage captured Wendling leading her to his car at 1:42 p.m. on that fateful day.
The following day, he made a distressing call to his parents, confessing to killing Gina and expressing his intention to take his own life. Wendling's parents promptly alerted the authorities, revealing his location in LaSalle, his hometown.
Tragically, surveillance footage and witness accounts from a truck stop in LaSalle confirmed that the suspect shot and killed Gina around midnight on October 13. Wendling fled to Bettendorf, Iowa, where he ended his life as local officers approached his vehicle.
Gina and Wendling had been in a relationship for approximately 11 months, residing together in Grand Blanc Township. However, in late September, Gina's mother and sister moved her out of the apartment after she disclosed that she had been enduring months of abuse at the hands of Wendling.
Gina's oldest sister, Angelica Gintner, shared fond memories of her. She described Gina as "a very beautiful, down-to-earth, giving woman" who could brighten anyone's day with her smile and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Meanwhile, Dr. Justin Wendling was a medical resident at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc Township, according to New York Post.
Hospital's Compassion and Gina Bryant's Journey
The hospital responded to the tragedy with a statement, offering emotional and spiritual support to its staff and providers during this difficult time. Spokeswoman Christine Gleason assured that the hospital was fully cooperating with law enforcement.
Gina's academic journey was marked by ambition and dedication. She attended the prestigious International Academy in Oakland County, where she met one of her best friends, Courtney Pefley, who remembered her as a remarkable and caring friend.
Gina graduated cum laude from Stevenson High School in Sterling Heights in 2016 and subsequently pursued her education at Grand Valley State University, earning her degree in 2020. At the time of her tragic passing, Gina was enrolled in the accelerated bachelor of science nursing program at the University of Michigan-Flint.
Nursing school dean Cynthia McCurren expressed her sorrow in an email to Gina's colleagues and faculty, emphasizing the devastating impact of her loss on the community. McCurren described Gina as an "extraordinary young woman with much ahead of her."
This heartbreaking incident is a stark reminder of the increasing prevalence of domestic violence cases. Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham urged the public to be vigilant and supportive, stating, "Unfortunately, the MCSO is seeing an uptick of Domestic Violence cases.
These incidents are tragic not only to the victims & survivors but to family members as well. Please, do not hesitate to reach out if you or someone you know is in an unsafe situation." The tragedy of Gina Bryant's life being cut short by domestic violence is a stark and sad reminder of the urgent need for awareness, intervention, and support for those affected by abusive relationships.
