The White House was compelled to remove a photograph of President Joe Biden meeting with US special forces in Israel because it revealed their identities.

It has been reported that a small group of US special forces is present in Israel to guide the potential rescue of numerous hostages, including Americans, who are being held by the terror group Hamas in Gaza.

Biden's Israel Visit Photo Showing Special Forces

An image of President Joe Biden shaking hands with special forces operators during his visit to Israel caused quite a stir. The photo was initially published on the official White House Instagram page, where it remained for several hours, attracting thousands of likes and comments, as per Daily Mail.

However, the image raised concerns as it appeared to violate Department of Defense rules, which typically mandate the blurring of elite units' identities in officially released photographs. The standard practice within the Pentagon is to conceal the identities of special forces operators, whether they are engaged in training or deployed on missions.

This anonymity is essential to protect the individuals involved and the security of their operations. In the photo in question, the special forces operators, unshaven with beards, were seen wearing camouflage attire with American flags on their arms as they shook hands with President Biden.

The encounter occurred during an event where the president met with Israeli medics who had responded to the recent attack by Hamas on October 7. It resulted in the tragic loss of hundreds of Jewish men, women, and children.

The now-deleted White House Instagram post included a caption, "In Israel, President Biden met with first responders to thank them for their bravery and the work they're doing in response to the Hamas terrorist attacks."

This caption emphasized the president's visit to express gratitude and support for the Israeli first responders who had acted heroically in the face of adversity. The White House later acknowledged the error and apologized for inadvertently revealing the faces of the special forces operators.

A White House spokesman said, "As soon as this was brought to our attention, we immediately deleted the photo. We regret the error and any issues this may have caused."

The blunder did not go unnoticed in the political sphere, with Republican Representative Diana Harshbarger describing it as "gross incompetence."

Security, Discretion Questions Surround Special Forces Incident

The incident raised questions about the security and discretion surrounding such special forces operators. Regarding the presence of these special forces operators in Israel, a Pentagon spokesman offered limited information, stating, "We are providing planning and intelligence support to the Israelis regarding hostage recovery. That's about the extent of what I can provide right now."

Separately, a Pentagon official explained that the US had deployed personnel as part of a broader assistance package to support efforts related to hostage recovery. This support included military personnel providing advice and consultation on hostage recovery efforts.

The White House has acknowledged the presence of a 'small handful' of US hostages among the more than 150 individuals being held by Hamas in Gaza. While the US is actively working to locate these hostages, the White House clarified that there are no plans or intentions to deploy US troops to participate directly in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

This incident involving the release of the special forces operators' identities brings the delicate balance between transparency, national security, and operational secrecy to the forefront. The decision to reveal their faces during President Biden's visit sparked controversy, raising concerns about the potential risks of such disclosures.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time special forces' identities have been unintentionally exposed in a public setting. In 2018, during President Donald Trump's administration, a video was posted on social media showing unblurred footage of Navy SEALs who had been deployed to Iraq.

This incident, like the recent one, ignited debates about the appropriate level of transparency and security in such matters, Times Now Navbharat reported.
