Spam emails are now sounding more human-like. If you are going to blame something, you can blame this issue on AI tools.
Luckily, Google announced that it will release a solution that will prevent Gmail spam from pestering users.
If you are using Gmail and other email platforms on a daily basis, here's what you need to know about the worsening spam email messages.
Detecting Spam Emails Getting More Difficult Due To AI
Tech Crunch's Haje Jan Kamps, a Dutch author, said that he received an email from his ex-colleague whom he hadn't seen for the past few years.
Kamps said that his friend's email message was greatly written. However, he noticed something strange about it. He explained that most of the Gmail messages he received from his friend were not as good as the latest one sent to him.
He described it as a lot more "eloquent" compared to other emails. This is when he realized that his former colleague used an artificial intelligence tool to generate the email message.
Kamps explained that his friend's email message clearly shows that generative AIs are becoming more adept at writing messages, that sound more human-like.
He warned that since new AI tools can now craft, personalized and convincing email messages, users will find it more difficult to detect which ones are written by bots and which ones are crafted by real humans.
The Dutch author claimed that if this AI trend goes on, sales, spam, and even phishing emails will be able to fool more users.
Now, the question is, how will Google protect its users from human-like AI-generated email messages?
Google's Solution To Worsening Spam Emails
The Verge reported that Google is planning to release an anti-spam solution this coming February 2024.
The tech firm will specifically implement new Gmail requirements that can improve email security, reduce spam messages, and make unsubscribing from commercial email senders easier.
Google said that the new requirements will be enforced on bulk Gmail senders; accounts that send over 5,000 messages to Gmail users each day.
Among the upcoming Gmail requirements is a clearer spam rate threshold for bulk email senders, which will prevent them from bombarding unwanted email messages to users.
Another rule that Google will implement is offering Gmail recipients the ability to unsubscribe from commercial emails with just a single click.
The last Gmail requirement is ordering bulk email senders to follow Google's best practices so that their emails can be strongly authenticated.
