Israeli Border Officer Stabbed in Knife Attack; Assailant Killed

The deceased assailant was identified as a Palestinian.

An Israeli border patrol officer has been seriously wounded after he was stabbed in a knife attack near a light rail station in Jerusalem's Old City on Monday (October 30).

Police immediately responded to the scene and shot the suspect dead. The 17-year-old assailant was not identified, UPI reported.

The border officer, also not identified by police, was given first aid before being taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The attack on Israeli security personnel was the second recorded since the Israel-Hamas War after two police officers were shot and wounded by a gunman who opened fire on a police station near the Old City's Damascus Gate a few weeks ago.

Motive for Knife Attack

The attack happened as tensions escalated across the Middle East due to the ongoing war after Israeli troops launched a ground invasion of Gaza.

This also came as Israel also struck military targets in Syria and Lebanon, which incited fears of a spillover of tensions.

Meanwhile, Israeli security forces have increased their presence in the Old City following the knife attack, while Palestinian media reported that Israeli police had blocked the entry into Jerusalem and the Temple Mount.

"Your vigilance, determination, and striving for contact are worthy of mention, well done," Border Police commander Brik Yitzhak said in a statement thanking officers for swiftly neutralizing the suspect. "You prevented a larger attack with your activity, if you had not come he would have taken the weapon and used it and harmed civilians."
