The U.K. AI Summit 2023 is surely making headlines as the United Kingdom urges world leaders to regulate the rising artificial intelligence industry.
However, the U.K. is not the only one concerned about the "catastrophic" risks posed by AI technologies. The U.S. also shared its concerns.
Because of this, the U.S. government also flexed its own AI regulatory efforts, which are supported by 30 countries. Is America competing with the United Kingdom?
UK AI Summit 2023: US Also Flexes AI Package Effort
According to New Scientist's latest report, while the United Kingdom was conducting its AI Summit 2023 at Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire, the U.S. Embassy in London also conducted its own AI conference on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
The main speaker was U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, who unveiled a package of actions on artificial intelligence. This effort also includes a political declaration, which was already signed by 30 countries.
If you compare it to the U.K. AI Summit 2023, the nations that supported the U.S. AI conference in London are notably more than those who signed up to the Bletchley Declaration.
Harris said that the U.S. AI effort package will mainly focus on the full spectrum of risks posed by artificial intelligence tools.
"Let us be clear, there are additional threats that also demand our action. Threats that are currently causing harm, and which to many people also feel existential," said the U.S. vice president.

What Kamala Harris Discussed About AI
The White House's official website provided the full transcript of Harris' speech during the U.S. AI conference in London.
The vice president explained that there's no denying AI tools can benefit Americans in many ways. However, artificial intelligence can also do harmful things.
"From AI-enabled cyberattacks at a scale beyond anything we have seen before to AI-formulated bio-weapons that could endanger the lives of millions," said Harris.
She explained that the threats she mentioned are often referred to as "existential" risks since they can endanger the very existence of humanity.
To protect the United States and other countries from AI's posed risks, Harris discussed the efforts that she and U.S. Joe Biden will make.
These include establishing a national safety reporting program on the unsafe use of artificial intelligence tools in medical facilities and hospitals.
She added that the U.S. government will require tech firms to design tools that will discern if visual or audio content is generated by AIs.
Aside from this, Harris also promised that the U.S. government will work on legislation that will require AI developers to submit their AI safety test results.
