Tourist Boat Sinks in Bahamas—at Least 1 American Dead

Investigations on the death in the incident are underway.

A US tourist was reportedly dead in the Bahamas after a catamaran carrying over 100 people sank while traveling to a private island this week.

The Associated Press reported that emergency services identified the deceased as a woman in her 70s from Broomfield, Colorado who was on vacation alongside her family when the boat sank late Tuesday evening (November 14).

There was no immediate explanation for the boat and how the old woman died.

Bahamian police Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings added that the rest of the passengers and crew were rescued, while two unidentified people were taken to hospital in an unknown condition.

Police said in a statement that the female tourist was found unresponsive in an operation involving the Royal Bahamas Defense Force while pulling the other passengers and crew from the water. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Police added that the double-deck boat began taking on water after departing Paradise Island with a group of tourists headed to Blue Lagoon Island, a popular destination located just northeast of the capital of Nassau.

A video posted on social media showed some passengers yelling as the catamaran began listing to the right, prompting some passengers to jump overboard.

Investigations are underway, authorities said.
