The Los Angeles Clippers are reportedly the frontrunners to sign former Indiana Pacers forward Danny Granger. While the San Antonio Spurs are still in contention for Granger, the Clippers can offer the veteran the most playing time, ESPN reports.
The Philadelphia 76ers waived Granger on Wednesday after reaching a buyout agreement. Granger, 30, is believed to want to play for a championship-contending team and appears likely to get his wish. Although the Miami Heat, Clippers and Spurs were mentioned as potential landing spots, an ESPN report published on Thursday indicated Granger is leaning toward Los Angeles.
Per ESPN's Marc Stein and Ramona Shelburne:
"The Los Angeles Clippers met with the representatives of swingman Danny Granger during Wednesday night's game against the Houston Rockets and have nudged ahead of the San Antonio Spurs in the race for Granger's services, according to sources close to the process.
"The Clippers are widely regarded as the team best positioned to provide Granger the playing time and the championship contention he craves.
"And they've stepped up their pursuit of the former All-Star, sources told ESPN.com, at least partly due to growing concern within the organization about the status of guard J.J. Redick, who has missed the past nine games and is out indefinitely with a back injury."
The Spurs and Granger share a "mutual interest," according to ESPN, but the veteran is unlikely to get as much playing time in San Antonio's crowded frontcourt. Miami is seemingly out of the question after a Miami Herald report indicated Granger would be unwelcome in the Heat locker room.
Because Granger was waived before March 1, he is eligible to play in the postseason with whichever team he signs with.
