Argentina's far-right president-elect, Javier Milei, is set to meet with US President Joe Biden's national security adviser and other American officials to discuss economic policies.
In a statement on Monday, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that Milei will meet with White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan. The Democratic president, who will be traveling to Georgia on Tuesday, will not attend the meeting.
Javier Milei To Meet With Biden Officials
The Treasury Department noted that Milei's economic policy adviser will meet with senior Treasury officials on Tuesday. That meeting will focus on the incoming Argentinian president's economic policies.
Kirby said they want to continue looking for ways to cooperate with Argentina on various issues. He added that the South American region is a healthy and vibrant partner regarding several matters.
He added that they look forward to hearing Milei's plans and where he wants to go regarding policy issues. Kirby noted that they want to ensure they have a chance to keep the channel of communication open between the two nations, as per Yahoo Finance.
Milei's expected meetings in Washington are protocol-driven to explain his economic plan. This includes fiscal adjustment, monetary reform, state reform, and deregulation. A spokesman for the president-elect said the situation is not in search of financing.
The far-right leader is routinely compared to former US President Donald Trump and secured his victory in the elections earlier this month. He is scheduled to be inaugurated on Dec. 10.
He has regularly spoken in favor of Trump and said that the Republican businessman talked to him last week and plans to meet sometime soon. That talk came hours after Biden had his discussions with Milei.
The White House said that the Democratic president congratulated Milei and spoke of "the strong relationship" between the two nations on economic issues, regional and multilateral cooperation, and shared policies, according to the Associated Press.
On Monday, Milei spent his time in New York City and was traveling to Washington for his talks with International Monetary Fund officials. He also visited the burial place of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson.
Argentina's Economic Policies
Milei has previously expressed his staunch support for Israel, both before and after winning the presidential election in Argentina. During his campaign, he frequently waved an Israeli flag at various rallies.
He also noted that he wishes to move Argentina's embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, emulating a move by Trump. The 53-year-old president-elect also vowed to scrap multiple government departments and sometimes campaigned by waving a chainsaw from the stage.
Argentinian voters punished the government for decades of economic decline as the nation's annual inflation has recently skyrocketed to 143%. Milei had also pledged to ditch the peso for the US dollar and shut down the central bank. He accused it of rampant money printing to finance government overspending.
Milei said he would also cut down on state spending and ditch roughly ten government ministries, among other controversial proposals. Later on, he toned down some of his rhetoric, leaving uncertainty over his plans for the country, said the Voice of American News.
