Google quietly pushed back the release of its Gemini AI model to next year amid reports of supposed language-related issues.
The tech giant's GPT-4 competitor was initially supposed to come out before the end of the year after it was teased at I/O 2023. At the time, Google touted Gemini AI as a foundational model with "impressive multimodal capabilities."
Google Delays Release of Gemini AI
The company did not publicly announce the initial release date but pushed it back after reports that Gemini AI was struggling with non-English queries. The issue prompted CEO Sundar Pichai to delay the live release of the artificial intelligence model.
Gemini AI was intended to be able to handle a broad range of applications, putting together different types of data such as images and text for more advanced tasks. Google said in May that once the model is fine-tuned and rigorously tested for safety, it would be available in various sizes and capabilities.
The model is expected to bring improvements to the tech giant's existing AI and AI-enhanced products. These include Bard AI, Google Assistant, and Search. However, due to the significance of this release and the dominance of rival OpenAI, it seems that Google is not going to rush Gemini AI into the public, as per Engadget.
The delay in Gemini AI's release comes as OpenAI is pushing the launch of its GPT Store to early 2024. The company first introduced its GPT Builder tool in early November during its first developer conference. It gave subscribers an easy way to make their own custom AI bots.
At the time of the announcement, OpenAI added that it would soon release the GPT Store for users to list their reactions and potentially make money from them. This was also initially slated for a November release.
However, due to the surprise ouster of OpenAI's since-reinstated CEO Sam Altman, the month's plan did not follow the schedule. In an email on Friday that was sent to GPT Builder users, OpenAI said that they are now planning to launch the GPT Store early next year.
Competition in the Generative AI Market
While Gemini AI has yet to be released to the public, it has been said to strongly outperform GPT-4 from OpenAI. This is because it harnesses a lot more computing power than its artificial intelligence competitor, according to Business Insider.
In a statement, Google's Vice President and manager of Bard and Google Assistant, Sissie Hsiao said that she has seen some pretty amazing things regarding Gemini AI. She added that when she tried to bake a cake, the model drew three pictures of the steps on how to ice a three-layer cake.
The delay of the artificial intelligence model's release comes a few months after the tech giant combined its Brain and DeepMind AI labs to create a new research known as Google DeepMind. As researchers anticipate the generative AI market to be worth roughly $1.3 trillion by 2032, it is clear that Google is going far and beyond to invest in the space to maintain its position as a leader in AI development, said Techopedia.
