A woman in Michigan bravely tried to steal at a Walmart during a "Shop With Cop." If this doesn't surprise you, imagine shoplifting near over 70 police officers.
Law enforcement authorities said that the shoplifting incident happened on Saturday, Dec. 2. A clerk told them that a lady tried to self-checkout a cart packed with goods worth around $730.
This surprised the cops and employees of the Livingston County Walmart. Here's the full story of the brave lady shoplifter who faced dozens of cops.
Michigan: Woman Bravely Steals at Walmart During 'Shop With Cop' Event
Michigan State Police Lt. Rene Gonzales said that the weekend Shop With Cop event was organized to help children who might not have a good Christmas.
He said that kids usually get a $100 or they are provided with a $150 gift card, which they can use to shop for themselves or with their families.
During the Walmart Shop With Cop event, many state troopers and police officers paraded in lights and sirens. Their presence and sirens are already more than enough to let Livingston County residents know they are there.
However, a 62-year-old woman seems to not notice the cops at Walmart; or she just didn't care at all, as reported by Fox2 Detroit.
According to Fox News' latest report, a Michigan state trooper followed the old shoplifter after they were notified by a Walmart clerk.
"Groceries, clothes, all kinds of stuff. It wasn't bagged up. And then she walked out of the store with it," said Gonzales.
He added that the clerk was ignored by the shoplifter when she was asked for a receipt. Instead, she walked towards her car, which was ironically parked next to a police cruiser.
The lady thieve was arrested without any issues and is now facing a retail fraud charge. As of writing, her identity hasn't been revealed by law enforcement authorities.
Police Surprised With Shoplifter's Actions
Gonzales and other state troopers who saw what the 62-year-old shoplifter did were surprised.
"I do have to say it surprised me because when I'm driving a patrol car, people slow down," he explained.
"When you see 75 cops in the store, I mean, I don't know if maybe they thought we were too busy," added the lieutenant.
Aside from them, other Walmart shoppers also can't believe what happened during the event. One of them was Mariah Manion.
The Michigan resident said that she honestly thinks that stealing in front of 70 cops is not something that a person in the right mind would do.
