Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently praised the strengthening military alliance between Russia and Iran, attributing significant progress in the war in Ukraine to this partnership.
During a meeting with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi at the Kremlin, Putin expressed his gratitude to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for the support that has given Russian forces a strategic advantage in the ongoing conflict, as per Mail Online.
Iran's Military Support Fuels Russia in War
This alliance has seen a steady influx of Iranian military supplies to Russia, including kamikaze drones, artillery shells, and bullets. These supplies have been crucial for Russia as it faces international sanctions. Putin's acknowledgment of this support comes amidst reports of significant Russian losses in the war.
In his dialogue with Raisi, Putin remarked on the positive momentum gained over the past year due to Iran's assistance. Despite setbacks, Russian forces are now reportedly regaining ground, with the war reaching a stalemate as winter approaches.
Putin's diplomatic efforts extend beyond Iran, as he has been actively engaging with leaders across the Gulf region to elevate Russia's role as a regional power broker. His visit to the UAE was met with a warm reception, though a somewhat awkward interaction occurred during a press conference with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Ukraine has been strengthening its own military capabilities. Ukrainian Minister for Strategic Industries Alexander Kamyshin announced agreements with two American companies for joint production of 155mm artillery shells in Ukraine. This move, expected to take a few years to implement, is critical as the demand for these shells has skyrocketed since Russia's invasion.
The European Union, however, faces challenges in meeting its production targets for ammunition, a situation that could have significant implications for the continent's security. Prof. Justin Bronk from the Royal United Services Institute warned of Europe's vulnerability to Russian aggression, especially if a conflict between the United States and China were to occur, according to The Telegraph.
Iran, Russia Ink New Deal to Combat Western Sanctions
Meanwhile, Iran and Russia, both facing Western sanctions, have inked a new deal to counter these economic measures. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian met in Moscow to formalize this agreement. This meeting was part of the "Caspian Five" summit, which also included leaders from central Asian nations bordering the Caspian Sea.
In their joint declaration, Russia and Iran emphasized efforts to overcome the impact of unilateral sanctions imposed by the US and its allies. Lavrov stressed the importance of coordinated global efforts to counter these sanctions, which he views as a substitute for diplomacy.
As part of their military collaboration, Iran has been a key supplier of drones and weapons to Russia for the war in Ukraine. There are also concerns about Iran potentially sending ballistic missiles to Russia, a claim supported by US intelligence. In return, Iran is set to receive Russian Su-35 fighter jets and Mil Mi-28 attack helicopters, as confirmed by Iranian Deputy Defence Minister Mahdi Farahi.
With respect to the balance of power and the continuing crisis in Ukraine, this emerging alliance between Russia and Iran, characterized by mutual military backing and an agreement against Western sanctions, portends a huge geopolitical change, Express reported.
