Google Fiber service will soon be available in Kansas City, particularly Shawnee. This is part of the continuous effort of Google to expand the service in Kansas. Shawnee is the third community that will have this internet service.
Google Fiber is a trial broadband internet using fiber optic technology. When Google announced this project, over 1,000 communities applied to have this service. The search engine company used an extensive selection process to identify those that will participate in this project until they finally selected Kansas City, Kansas; Kansas City, Missouri; North Kansas City, Missouri; Austin, Texas and Provo, Utah.
Google selected Shawnee because it saw the different programs the community has which help its citizens up to date and involved using the Internet service. In fact, Shawnee has a website where they post news about crimes, financial reports and meetings of the city council.
Mayor Jeff Meyers is delighted to be shortlisted by Google. He believes that the Google Fiber service will be valuable to the people of Kansas because of its excellent, fast and reliable internet connection which will them to have quicker access to important information available in the web. Shawnee is expecting to benefit from this technology in few years time.
Google haven’t announced yet a specific date when people can use it since they need to do planning and engineering first. For now, the Shawnee website has been updated to include some Google Fiber information to prepare the people once the service goes live.
In Provo, Utah, Google will be buying iProvo, the city’s existing fiber network, to have it upgraded and converted as Google Fiber. This means that it is very likely to have the service live before 2013.
Austin, Texas will have the service by 2014.
Google Fiber is not alone in this technology. There is also Vtel based on Vermont which is offering the service 50 percent cheaper and CenturyLink based in Omaha.
