A new AI system could soon help combat school shootings. If this new technology is efficient enough, then it would greatly benefit the United States to solve gun violence in schools and universities.
Iterate AI will offer the new artificial intelligence system, a California-based AI tech firm that serves numerous industries, such as retail, automotive, insurance, and convenience banking.
Iterate.ai Chief Technology Officer Brian Sathianathan said that they noticed that schools could really use their help in preventing mass shootings by detecting guns before they are brought inside campuses.
New AI System Can Combat School Shootings
Iterate AI's latest initiative involves offering a product to schools that can help security detect weapons and prevent possible mass shootings.
Sathianathan, also Iterate AI's co-founder, said that they spent years developing an AI system that can effectively detect a gun being brought inside proximity.
Brian explained that there's no denying that their development process was pretty long. But, the benefits it could offer to ensure people's safety against guns are definitely rewarding.
"We had to collect a lot of information and data about various weapons especially," said Iterate AI's CTO via USA Today.
"We looked at the attacks that happened in the last 20 years and gathered weapons and videos and various cases around those," he added.
Sathianathan said that Iterate AI could access over 20,000 data sets from the internet, as well as from law enforcement officials, who were really happy to assist them.
Iterate AI's CTO added that an additional 40,000 data sets were synthetically generated by their artificial intelligence.
What Guns Can Iterate AI's System Detect?
Brian Sathianathan claimed that their advanced AI system not only detects guns and semi-automatic weapons but can also identify knives that are six inches long.
Aside from these, Iterate AI's CTO also promised that their artificial intelligence can detect Kevlar vests. Sathianathan explained that schools and universities need a technology similar to what they have to combat mass shootings.
To help educational institutions in the U.S., he promised they are working on a free, open-source version of their AI system, which would be the most effective gun-detecting way for many schools.
"We want to encourage a lot of folks to try it out. We would love people to contribute and make changes, find bugs, and fix them to get an amazing version for the greater good," he explained.
Iterate AI is just among the American tech firms making efforts to develop systems to combat gun violence. Previously, ABC News reported that ZeroEyes, a Pennsylvania-based AI company, offered its new technology to the Ocean City School District in New Jersey.
Aside from Ocean City, hundreds of clients across 35 U.S. states also partnered with ZeroEyes to use its gun-detecting AI system. If you want to learn more about this innovation, you can click here.
