'Max Payne' Voice Actor James McCaffrey Passes Away at 65

The 'Max Payne' video game voice actor James McCaffrey passed away at 65 on Sunday at his home in Larchmont, New York.

McCaffrey spent decades acting in movies and television shows before he became well-known for his voice acting in video games.

Rochelle Boström, the actor's wife, confirmed that McCaffrey has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer.

His co-workers in the gaming world have paid tribute to the iconic actor. Rockstar Games posted on X, formerly Twitter, and on his Instagram, "Rest in Peace James McCaffrey, the inimitable and commanding presence who brought Max Payne to life."

Remedy Entertainment and an account for 'Alan Wake 2' released a statement about McCaffrey's death. The management said that they were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of their beloved friend and collaborator James McCaffrey, the iconic voice of Max Payne and Alex Casey.

They added that his remarkable talent gave life to the characters and left an enduring impact on the community. They expressed that their hearts go out to his family in this time of loss.

Sam Lake, a writer and director for Remedy Entertainment, said he was heartbroken by the recent news.

He shared that they have worked together for over 25 years, and he remains a lovely man and a dear friend. He added that he was a key part of the Remedy family, saying he was a brilliant actor and that no one could do what he did better than him.

McCaffrey was survived by his wife and daughter, Tiernan.

McCaffrey's breakout role was in the police drama 'New York Undercover.' He also appeared in minor roles in 'Dick Wolf' shows, such as 'Swift Justice,' 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent,' and 'Law and Order: SVU.'

He also played minor roles in his films 'The Truth About Cats and Dogs,' 'Nick and Jane' and 'American Splendour.'

McCaffrey said his favorite role was in Rescue Me,' in which he played Jimmy Keefe, a New York firefighter who died on 9/11.

He said he had a friend who grew up two houses away from them in high school, and his brother was in the towers. One brother got out, and the other did not.

He added that he had a couple of good acquaintances in the fire department. He shared that he goes down there every September 11th with another friend, an actor who lost his best friend in the South Tower.

However, he was best known as the voice of 'Max Payne,' a former NYPD officer turned DEA agent who wants to avenge his murdered wife and daughter. McCaffrey played the character in all three 'Max Payne' video games released in 2001, 2003, and 2012.
