Blind in the Water: Norwegian Cruise Ship Loses Power During North Sea Storm

The passengers and crew aboard are safe, Danish rescuers say.

The Norwegian cruise ship MS Maud lost power after a rogue wave shattered windows on the bridge while sailing in the North Sea this week.

The Danish Joint Rescue Coordination Center said on Thursday, December 21 that the damage affected her navigation systems and radars, but her main engine remained functional and the 266 passengers and 131 crew members aboard were safe.

"I don't think there is any danger to the ship now," a spokesperson for the rescue center added. "If the captain thought so, he would have asked to be evacuated, which he hasn't."

A towage vessel from the civil rescue company Esvagt was scheduled to arrive at the location of the Maud at around 22:30 UTC to assist her in navigation as she could only be steered from the engine room. Once near the shore, tugboats would tow her to port.

Freak Wave Blinds the Maud

Reuters reported that the Maud was sailing roughly 200 kilometers off the west coast of Denmark and roughly 330 kilometers off of Britain's east coast when the windows of her bridge were shattered, allowing water to enter and short-circuiting all electronics in it.

HX, a subsidiary of Norway's Hurtigruten Group that owns the vessel, also said that the ship left Faroe on Thursday and was due to arrive in Tilbury on Friday (December 22).

"Earlier this afternoon, December 21, MS Maud reported a temporary loss of power after encountering a rogue wave," Hurtigruten said in an emailed statement acquired by Reuters. "At this time, the ship has confirmed that no serious passenger or crew injuries have been sustained as a result of the incident and the condition of the ship remains stable."
