Elijah Blue Allman, Cher's 47-year-old son, has mental health and substance abuse issues, according to the singer's filing for his conservatorship.
Sole guardianship of her son's assets is what the singer is asking, as per a report by People, which acquired paperwork filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, December 27. Apparently, her son is "substantially unable to manage his financial resources."
The petition expresses the urgent need for a conservator to safeguard Allman's property from harm or loss, citing his incapacity to handle his assets as a result of his serious mental health and drug misuse problems.
"Elijah is entitled to regular distributions from the Trust, but given his ongoing mental health and substance abuse issues, [Cher] is concerned that any funds distributed to Elijah will be immediately spent on drugs, leaving Elijah with no assets to provide for himself and putting Elijah's life at risk," the document indicates.
The document goes on to say that Allman cannot have Marieangela King, his estranged wife, as his conservator due to the history of drug abuse and mental health issues in their troubled marriage.
Abduction Rumors
The lawsuit follows earlier claims that Cher had allegedly paid four men to abduct her son in an effort to prevent him from reuniting with King. The singer addressed the accusations and clarified that they were not true.
The allegation first appeared in September in newly-surfaced divorce papers pertaining to Allman and King. The papers show that the pair divorced in 2021, although they purportedly had a 12-day reconciliation in November 2022. During this time, on November 30, which is also their wedding anniversary, four men reportedly broke into their hotel room in New York and kidnapped Allman.
"I am currently unaware of my husband's [well-being] or whereabouts. I am very concerned and worried about him," King said in a statement she made on December 4, 2022. She went on to say that one of the four guys had said that Cher had hired them and that she had been informed she could not see or communicate with Allman, who was under lockdown at an unnamed treatment center at the time.
'This Is My Job'
Cher chose not to elaborate on the matter further than to dispute the abduction claims. Nevertheless, she did provide another statement about the conservatorship application, as reported by Rolling Stone.
"I'm a mother. This is my job - one way or another, to try to help my children. You do anything for your children. Whenever you can help them, you just do it because that's what being a mother is. But it's joy, even with heartache - mostly, when you think of your children, you just smile and you love them, and you try to be there for them."
Cher has been relentless in her efforts to get Allman care and the assistance he needs, as confirmed in a court filing this week.
On January 5, 2024, a hearing will be held to consider a temporary conservatorship order. The next scheduled hearing is on March 6, 2024, to consider a permanent order.
