Japan Airlines Plane Catches Fire in Tokyo’s Haneda Airport

Authorities say the plane allegedly collided with Japanese Coast Guard aircraft after landing.

A Japan Airlines (JAL) aircraft caught fire at Tokyo's Haneda Airport on Tuesday, January 2, as firefighters are still extinguishing the blaze.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported and provided video footage that JAL Flight 516, an Airbus A350 flying from Hokkaido to Tokyo, allegedly collided with what appeared to be a Japanese Coast Guard aircraft after landing.

The office of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida reportedly instructed relevant agencies to coordinate in swiftly assessing the damage and providing information to the public.

Haneda airport officials said it has closed all of its runways following the incident.

JAL Passengers, Crew Escape Inferno

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that all 379 passengers and crew of the JAL plane escaped with their lives.

On the other hand, five out of the six crew members of the Coast Guard plane remained unaccounted for. The sixth person, the pilot commanding the plane, escaped.

The Japanese Coast Guard said that its plane was supposed to be heading to Niigata airport on the country's west coast to deliver aid to those caught up in a powerful earthquake that struck on New Year's Day, which killed at least 48 people as of Tuesday.
