Carrie Bernans, who appeared in films such as 'Black Panther' and 'The Color Purple,' was injured in a pedestrian accident in New York City on January 1.
Bernans performed stunts in the musical version of 'The Color Purple' released last month, and had an uncredited role in 'Black Panther' as a Dora Milaje fighting force member.
Bernans Injured in NYC Crash
On Monday, Bernans' mother, Patricia Lee, posted photos of her daughter's injuries on Instagram. Bernans suffered from multiple broken bones and chipped teeth.
She said Bernans was dealing with pain after the crash near Penn Station. Her mother noted that the young son of Bernans was not with her when she was injured. According to People, the pedestrian accident also led to eight other individuals sustaining injuries.
Two police officers, the driver, a passenger in the vehicle, and numerous more pedestrians were among the other casualties. The victims were sent to NYC health hospitals and Bellevue for medical attention, and the driver was arrested.
The crash happened about a dozen blocks south of Times Square, where thousands celebrated New Year.
Bernans' publicist did not immediately respond to a message requesting comment on Tuesday.
Police reported that Mohamed Alaouie, a 44-year-old man, was running away from them at around 1:30 am. The man drove onto the sidewalk and injured several pedestrians, including Bernans, who was pinned under a food truck.
Furthermore, the police said none of the wounds were life-threatening. The driver was arrested on charges including attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and driving while intoxicated.
Lee Thankful for Bernans' Second Life
Lee said, "Carrie is such a wonderful person."
She added that she was glad Bernans was still here. Bernans and her family flew to New York City to celebrate New Year. They had no idea that she would end up at Bellevue with multiple fractures, cuts, and bruises on her body.
However, Lee was also thankful that Bernan's 7-month-old son stayed with her that night in the hotel. According to ABC7 New York, the last few months have not been easy for Bernans, who became a new mother and was forced out of work due to the accident.
She now faces a storm of medical bills for physical rehabilitation and reconstructive surgery. Her family was now sincerely requesting assistance. Lee shared that they started a GoFundMe because they could not cover all the expenses for Bernan's recovery. However, despite the nightmare, she still remembers to count her blessings.
She hopes her daughter returns to Los Angeles to pursue her career again in the future. She claimed that some people may say they negatively started their New Year and said, "We started New Year's off with all of our children. And this one wasn't lost."
