Israel's Post-War Plan for Gaza Unveiled by Defense Minister; Giving Palestinians Control Over Territory Included

Israel's post-war plan for the Gaza Strip was finally unveiled by the Israeli defense minister. However, this plan doesn't represent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders.

On Thursday, Jan. 4, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant unveiled his own post-war plan for the Palestinian city. After explaining his goals, he submitted the proposal to the war cabinet of Netanyahu.

This is considered to be the first time that a senior Israeli official offered suggestions for what's going to happen next to the Gaza Strip once the Israel-Hamas war is over.

According to The Times of Israel, the post-war plan proposal of Gallant isn't the official policy of the Israeli government yet since there are stark differences among officials regarding the Palestinian city's faith after the war.

The Israeli defense minister provided the requirements before implementing his suggested post-war plan in case Benyanjin Netanyahu and other senior leaders approved it.

These include the following:

  • All hostages taken by the Hamas terrorist group on Oct. 7 should be secured.
  • The governing and military capabilities of Hamas should be dismantled.
  • If there are other military threats aside from the Palestinian terrorist group, they should be removed as well.

Yoav Gallant said that once these requirements are achieved, a new phase will start in the Gaza Strip, in which the city will no longer be controlled by Hamas terrorists, as reported by The Guardian.

He added that they will ensure that the Gaza Strip will no longer pose any security threat to civilians of Israel.

In Gallant's post-war plan for the Gaza Strip, it was stated that the Palestinian Authority (PA)-the Fatah-controlled government body of Palestine-would no longer be allowed to govern the city.

Aside from this, his plan also doesn't provide for resettling Gaza. Instead, Yoav Gallant suggested allowing unspecified Palestinian bodies to govern the territory.

"Gaza residents are Palestinian, therefore Palestinian bodies will be in charge, with the condition that there will be no hostile actions or threats against the State of Israel," said the Israeli senior official.

He added that Israel should also be allowed to operate inside the Palestinian city. However, he clarified that there would no longer be an Israeli civilian presence within the Gaza Strip.
