United States Rep. Lauren Boebert denied accusations that she punched her ex-husband Jayson Boebert as she is part of a police investigation after an incident in a Colorado restaurant.
The incident occurred on Saturday night and it is being investigated by the Silt Police Department. Silt Police Chief Mike Kite confirmed that the investigation is ongoing but declined to add further details because they were still gathering facts.
Lauren Boebert Under Investigation
Law enforcement personnel responded to a call to the Miner's Claim restaurant located in SIlt on Saturday night. However, Kite initially did not provide details or describe the nature of the incident or even the accusations. He added that the Silt Police Department will release its report on the incident after the investigation concludes.
The police chief said that they already had a lot of facts and needed to sort out a lot of stuff but noted that no one was taken into custody at the restaurant. Boebert released a statement from her campaign manager, saying that it was a "sad situation" that kept escalating.
She noted that it was just another reason that she was moving and proceeded to deny claims that she punched her ex-husband in the face, as per the Denver Post.
The American representative said that she plans to consult with her lawyer regarding Jayson's claims about her during their Saturday night encounter. The latter said during a short phone interview that he called the Silt Police Department on Sunday morning and explained that he did not want to press charges against her ex-wife.
Jayson said that he did not want anything to happen regarding the situation, adding that he and his ex-wife were working through a difficult conversation. He ended the interview without answering more questions regarding the incident in the restaurant.
The couple's meeting at the restaurant was allegedly to settle a previous argument after Boebert picked up one of her sons at Jayson's home. There, the lawmaker's ex-husband allegedly started being disrespectful and showed aggressive behavior, which prompted her to become defensive, according to the Daily Beast.
Punching Her Ex-Husband
The situation comes as Boebert, who represents Colorado's 3rd Congressional District, filed for divorce from her husband in April last year, citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce became final in October and came as the couple had been married since 2005 and have four sons and one grandchild.
The incident also comes after Boebert announced last month that she would switch congressional districts ahead of a tough re-election race, leaving the state's 3rd District for the 4th.
While congressional candidates are not required to live in the districts that they represent, Boebert said that she would leave Silt and move to the 4th next year. The lawmaker was first elected to Congress in 2020.
Several other Republican candidates had already said that they would run in the primary for the 4th District seat, which is open following Rep. Ken Buck's retirement announcement. Boebert's decision to change districts gives the Republican Party a stronger foothold in the 3rd District in a fight against Democrat Adam Frisch, said the Washington Post.
