Israeli police opened fire at a pair of suspected attackers who rammed their vehicle into a West Bank checkpoint, resulting in the fatal shooting of a three-year-old Palestinian girl in a nearby car.
The two suspects were also shot, and a young police officer sustained light injuries during the incident, as per New York Post.
Innocent Girl Killed in Israeli Police Response
The harrowing incident was captured by security cameras as a van passed through a checkpoint near the Palestinian village of Biddu. A second van failed to stop and veered into police officers, prompting the authorities to open fire. Unfortunately, the young girl, who was in the first van, lost her life in the crossfire.
Israeli police, in a statement on Sunday, acknowledged the tragic error, stating, "As a result of shooting at the terrorists, a girl who was in another vehicle at the checkpoint was hurt."
Magen David Adom, Israel's emergency medical agency, confirmed the child's death after a thorough examination. A preliminary investigation by the police revealed that the rapid response toward the suspects' vehicle may have inadvertently affected the vehicle carrying the child. The authorities have pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
This heartbreaking event adds to the escalating tensions in the West Bank, which have intensified since the outbreak of the Hamas-Israel war three months ago. The region has witnessed a series of violent clashes, including a fatal drive-by shooting and a roadside bomb explosion near a paramilitary border police vehicle.
The situation has become a cause of concern for the international community, with visits from the American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and the European Union's top diplomat, Josep Borrell Fontelles. Both diplomats expressed worries about the potential spread of the conflict, urging efforts to prevent further insecurity and suffering, according to The Sun.

Netanyahu Extends Gaza War as UN Labels Crisis
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at a recent cabinet meeting, asserted that the war must continue until all its goals are achieved, including eliminating Hamas, securing the release of hostages, and ensuring that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel.
As the conflict in Gaza enters its third month, the United Nations' emergency relief coordinator, Martin Griffiths, pleaded for an immediate end to the war, describing the situation in Gaza as an "epic catastrophe." The Biden administration has been urging Israel to allow more aid into Gaza to address the humanitarian crisis that has unfolded since the war's onset in October.
Despite the Israeli military's claims of gains against Hamas, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari cautioned that dismantling the group's capabilities both above and below ground would take time. The fighting is expected to continue throughout 2024, with concerns over the complexity of the situation in densely populated areas.
The conflict has also seen clashes with Iran's proxies, including skirmishes with Hezbollah along the northern border with Lebanon and attacks on ships by Houthis in the Red Sea. The international community remains committed to preventing the further escalation of the conflict and mitigating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, New York Times reported.
