Some top U.S. intelligence officials claim that Russia will try to interfere in the upcoming U.S. election in 2024 despite the ongoing war with Ukraine.
This is not the first time that the Russian government has interfered or is planning to disrupt the U.S. election. Some American officials claimed that the Kremlin already tried to sabotage the 2016 federal election.
Now, two top intelligence officials-National Security Agency Director Gen. Paul Nakasone and FBI Director Chris Wray-warned that Russia will allegedly try to disrupt the upcoming 2024 U.S. election.
US Intel Officials Claim Russia Will Interfere in 2024 Election
During a conference in New York, Paul Nakasone, who was seated alongside Chris Wray, told their audiences that Russia is still capable of disrupting the presidential election in the United States.
The NSA director said that the Kremlin has the bandwidth to conduct election interferences despite the ongoing war with Ukraine, which is draining the resources of both sides.
Nakasone, who is also the U.S. Cyber Command commander, said that 2024 is a critical year for Russia.
"They are looking at this [US election] and I would anticipate, with the challenge that they have in Ukraine, this is obviously where they want make an impact," he added via CNN.
Wray also shared his remarks, saying that it can be argued that the invasion of Ukraine is further motivating Russia to sabotage the U.S. presidential election in order to somehow reshape the United States.
He said that Russia wants to interfere in the U.S. election since it wants to change what Americans think about the ongoing worldly problems, such as its war with Ukraine.
The FBI director further stated that the U.S. policy is very important to Russia's outrageous and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. Wray warned that the "stars align" for Russia when it comes to influencing the U.S. operations, such as the election, as well as succeeding in its Ukraine invasion.
How Russia Could Possibly Interfere in US Election
According to The New York Times, Russia has many methods to interfere in the U.S. 2024 election. One of the most common disruption campaigns it could launch is hacking.
In 2016, authorities claimed that Russian hackers were able to target voting systems. However, their claims lacked evidence since foreign countries clarified that disrupting vote counts is far too difficult.
They explained that even hacking into local government computer networks will have little to no effect on the vote counts. Aside from hacking, Russia could also rely on the rise of artificial intelligence.
Industry experts said that with advanced AI systems, Russia and other foreign countries can now easily mimic native English speakers. They can use artificial intelligence to generate fake video and audio recordings to affect the images of running presidential candidates.
But these will all remain speculations and allegations until Russia really launches these rumored election interference campaigns during the U.S. 2024 election.
