Google Announces Job Cuts in Hardware, Voice Assistant Teams

Alphabet Workers Union said the job cuts were unnecessary.

Google has laid off hundreds of its employees working on its hardware, voice assistance, and engineering teams in an effort to downsize its business.

According to a statement obtained by the Associated Press, the job cuts came as the company was looking towards "responsibly investing" in its "biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead."

"Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally," it added.

Google Cutting Jobs

Google earlier announced that it was making a few hundred roles redundant, most of which affecting the augmented reality hardware team. The cuts follow pledges by executives of Google's parent company, Alphabet, to reduce costs, with Google saying that it would lay off 12,000 employees or around 6% of its total workforce.

However, the Alphabet Workers Union posted on X - formerly Twitter - that the latest cuts were "needless" and that their layoffs were a cause for concern.

"We won't stop fighting until our jobs are safe!" the union added.

The latest layoffs were not an isolated incident, as there have been recent job cuts across the tech industry, including Meta, Spotify, and Amazon.

Google has also been facing a fierce rivalry with Microsoft as both firms strive to lead in the artificial intelligence domain.
