Broko played a crucial role in protecting the lives of state troopers and officers on December 21 as they sought to serve a warrant for Vaughn R. Malloy, a 42-year-old individual linked to a 2022 shooting incident. Unfortunately, the situation escalated, resulting in the fatal shooting of Malloy by the police.

To commemorate Broko's sacrifice, a memorial service will be held at Rentschler Field in East Hartford at 10:00 a.m. The service, while not open to the public, will be live-streamed on the State Police Facebook page, providing an opportunity for people to pay their respects remotely. K9 teams from across the nation, who trained with the Connecticut State Police K9 Unit, have been invited to join the memorial.

During the award ceremony, Officer James Collins, Broko's handler, accepted the K9 Medal of Valor on behalf of his dedicated partner. The medal, symbolizing honor and respect, serves as a lasting tribute to Broko's courage and selflessness, acknowledging the pivotal role he played in ensuring public safety.

Officer Collins, visibly moved, delivered a heartfelt speech, recounting the impact Broko had on countless lives and the irreplaceable bond they shared. The tragic loss of Broko has deeply affected both Officer Collins and the entire police department, emphasizing the risks law enforcement officers, both human and canine, undertake daily to safeguard communities, according to WWLP Springfield.
