In a solemn ceremony held at the Connecticut State Police Training Academy, K9 Officer Broko, who lost his life in the line of duty last month while attempting to subdue a fleeing suspect, was posthumously awarded the state's first-ever K9 Medal of Valor.
The ceremony, attended by fellow K9 officers, law enforcement officials, and Broko's handlers, paid tribute to the exceptional service and bravery displayed by the highly skilled police dog, as per Fox News.
Broko played a crucial role in protecting the lives of state troopers and officers on December 21 as they sought to serve a warrant for Vaughn R. Malloy, a 42-year-old individual linked to a 2022 shooting incident. Unfortunately, the situation escalated, resulting in the fatal shooting of Malloy by the police.
To commemorate Broko's sacrifice, a memorial service will be held at Rentschler Field in East Hartford at 10:00 a.m. The service, while not open to the public, will be live-streamed on the State Police Facebook page, providing an opportunity for people to pay their respects remotely. K9 teams from across the nation, who trained with the Connecticut State Police K9 Unit, have been invited to join the memorial.
During the award ceremony, Officer James Collins, Broko's handler, accepted the K9 Medal of Valor on behalf of his dedicated partner.
