President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are set to headline a rally in Virginia, addressing concerns over the Republican agenda to eliminate abortion rights entirely in the event of a GOP return to the White House.
President Joe Biden's reelection campaign will push to highlight the importance of the upcoming election for women's health and access to health care on what would have been the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will attend a rally in Virginia to discuss the Republican plan to completely eradicate abortion rights if a Republican president returns to the White House.
This comes after Virginia Democrats won majorities in the state Legislature due in large part to the abortion issue.
How Will Democrats Respond?
Democrats also intend to launch an ad campaign targeting women and swing voters in battleground states. It will focus on the impact of abortion bans across the nation and how they have affected women and healthcare providers.
"Donald Trump is the reason that more than 1 in 3 American women of reproductive age don't have the freedom to make their own health care decisions," Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement. "Now, he and MAGA Republicans are running to go even further if they retake the White House."
"Trump directly paved the way for Republican extremists across the country to enact draconian bans that are hurting women and threatening doctors," she continued. "In 2024, a vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris is a vote to restore Roe, and a vote for Donald Trump is a vote to ban abortion across the country."
Roe v. Wade was struck down in 2022. This ended all federal protections and paved the way for states to restrict access to abortion.
The Biden administration would like to hammer home the idea that a Republican president will certainly work toward a national abortion ban if elected in 2024.
The leading GOP candidate, Donald J. Trump, has repeatedly avoided answering questions about whether he would sign legislation restricting abortion even more.
In July 2022, the Biden administration issued guidance declaring that the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (Emtala), a federal statute that governs emergency rooms, permits abortion when necessary to stabilize a patient with a medical emergency, even in states where it is illegal.
