No. 7 Louisville hasn't lost in the month of February en route to seven straight wins, including a 88-66 win on Thursday against Temple. Senior guard Russ Smith, the Cardinals' leading scorer with 17.7 points per game, scored 24 points against Temple.
Smith tallied 19 points against Memphis when the two teams met on Jan. 9. After losing 73-67 to the Tigers in that game, Louisville coach Rick Pitino said he welcomed another tough challenge.
"It makes us mentally sharp and physically sharp," Pitino told reporters, via ESPN. "We're excited about the challenge. They hurt us on the backboard and hurt us with good shooting. We know what they do, and they are very talented."
No. 21 Memphis, meanwhile, had their two-game winning streak ended on Thursday with a 77-68 loss to Houston. Play from the Tigers' backcourt resulted in just 15 points and eight turnovers, and it didn't sit well with coach Josh Pastner, according to ESPN.
"And it caught up to us," Pastner said. "I said guys, 'You have to snap out of this. This is your senior year. If I were a senior, I would be so thrilled about playing. Sometimes you walk around out there like you are in a zombie mode, and we don't need you in a zombie mode.' There is so much to play for, so be excited, thankful and enthused. ...
"Bottom of line is ... if three of our four guards are going to play not well, it's going to make it tough for us."
