America Ferrera Disappointed Over Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig Snubs Amid ‘Barbie’ Oscar Nomination

America Ferrera believes Greta Gerwig has fulfilled all criteria for a Best Director nomination.

America Ferrera grapples with mixed emotions after receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 'Barbie' movie.

The 2024 Oscar nominations, unveiled on Tuesday, include a competitive field in the Best Supporting Actress category, featuring Emily Blunt for 'Oppenheimer,' Danielle Brooks for 'The Color Purple,' Jodie Foster for 'Nyad,' and Da'Vine Joy Randolph for 'The Holdovers.' This is Ferrera's first Oscar nod.

While she is thrilled over her first Oscar nomination, Ferrera also expressed disappointment in the absence of nominations for Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig. In her interview with Variety, she shared these conflicting feelings.

"I was incredibly disappointed that they weren't nominated," the 'Ugly Betty' star told the publication.

The actress lauded Gerwig for turning her directorial work into a global phenomenon, stating that the director "has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve" the coveted nomination.

Meanwhile, she praised Margot Robbie's exceptional performance in 'Barbie,' highlighting Robbie's knack for making complexity seem effortless and describing her as a master in her book.

Had Gerwig been nominated, it would have marked her second nomination for directing, following her recognition for 'Lady Bird.' The nominees for Best Director this year include Justine Triet for 'Anatomy of a Fall,' Martin Scorsese for 'Killers of the Flower Moon,' Christopher Nolan for 'Oppenheimer,' Yorgos Lanthimos for 'Poor Things,' and Jonathan Glazer for 'The Zone of Interest.'

Despite not earning a Best Actress nomination for the Academy Awards, Robbie received recognition as a producer for 'Barbie' in the Best Picture category.

This accomplishment also establishes Gerwig as the first woman to direct three films nominated for the top prize, joining her previous nods for 'Lady Bird' and 'Little Women.' Furthermore, Gerwig is acknowledged with a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, along with co-writer Noah Baumbach.

Other nominations for the top-grossing film of 2023 also encompass Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), Costume Design, Production Design, and Original Songs ('I'm Just Ken' and 'What Was I Made For?').

America Ferrera Champions Latiné Representation at Academy Awards

Expressing astonishment and gratitude for the Oscar nomination, Ferrera emphasized her pride in bringing Latiné representation to the Academy Awards.

In a statement sent to CNN, the United States-born star with Honduran immigrant parents highlighted the importance of diversity in the nominees.

"I'm so proud to get to bring Latiné representation to this years Academy Awards, along with my fellow Latiné nominees," she told the news outlet. "May the diversity of voices acknowledged by the Academy continue to grow!"

In 'Barbie,' Ferrera takes on the role of Gloria, who delivered an intense monologue addressing the challenges of womanhood in a persistently patriarchal society. This particular scene gained significant attention in the cinematic world last year, evoking emotions from many viewers.

On January 14, 2024, Ferrera received the SeeHer Award at the Critics Choice Awards. This accolade is bestowed upon a woman who advocates for gender equality, challenges norms, authentically portrays characters, and breaks stereotypes. Ferrera stands as the eighth recipient of this esteemed award.
