U.S. President Joe Biden is now urged by auto dealers to slow down the EPA tailpipe regulation. The Environmental Protection Agency introduced this new emission mandate back in April 2023.
The Biden Administration said that the new tailpipe emission regulation would greatly help reduce carbon emissions. Experts even considered it the most aggressive anti-carbon emission effort of the EPA.
However, auto dealers sent a letter to Joe Biden to urge him to halt the EPA tailpipe regulation. This is the second time that car dealers have done it since it already sent another letter two months ago.
Joe Biden Urged To Slow Down EPA Tailpipe Regulation
According to Fortune's latest report, the letter comes weeks before the Environmental Protection Agency makes its ruling on its tailpipe regulation for vehicles.
In November, almost 4,000 car dealerships asked Joe Biden to "tap the brakes" on the EPA tailpipe regulation proposal. Now, the latest letter was signed by over 4,700 auto dealers.
They provided their arguments on why the EPA EV mandate shouldn't be implemented. One of these is EV supplies which are twice as many as internal combustion engine vehicles.
Auto dealers argue that they won't be able to sell these electric vehicles at the rate that the EPA tailpipe regulation requires them to do so.
"It is uncontestable that the combination of fewer tax incentives, a woefully inadequate charging infrastructure, and insufficient consumer demand makes the proposed electric vehicle mandate completely unrealistic," said car dealers that signed the letter.
However, in its proposed tailpipe regulation, the EPA explained that auto dealers and carmakers can still meet the requirements by also selling hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and even cleaner internal-combustion engine vehicles.
EPA also suggested that auto dealers can employ the widespread use of particulate filters to reduce carbon emissions of conventional gasoline-powered cars.
What To Know About EPA Tailpipe Regulation
Clean Technica recently provided the scope of the proposed EPA tailpipe regulation. These include the following:
- Internal combustion engine vehicles (diesel- and petrol-powered cars) will not be banned. EPA also clarified that the sales of ICE vehicles will not be reduced immediately.
- EPA's tailpipe regulation only covers new vehicles introduced in 2027, meaning older cars and those that will be sold before 2027 will not be included.
- EPA's mandate will not directly impact drivers. Instead, the organization will conduct emission checks or mandates on carmakers and auto dealers.
