Galaxy S24 smartphones from South Korean electronics giant Samsung will use the Ernie chatbot from Baidu AI Cloud.
The Chinese tech behemoth Baidu has introduced Ernie as their take on OpenAI's ChatGPT, which is a chatbot powered by artificial intelligence (AI) that can mimic human responses in reaction to user commands.
This announcement follows Samsung's recent unveiling of the Galaxy S24 series with AI-powered capabilities.

According to CNBC, both firms announced that the upgraded Samsung Note Assistant, which now includes Ernie's understanding and generation capabilities, can translate content and summarize lengthy texts into clear, intelligently organized formats. With the click of a button, users can streamline the organization of extensive text.
Released in October 2023 was the Ernie 4.0 version. To date, Baidu claims that it is the "most powerful version of Ernie foundation model," equipped with complete comprehension, generation, reasoning, and memory capabilities.
Ernie 4.0's skills are supposedly on par with OpenAI's GPT-4 model, according to Baidu. At October's Baidu World 2023 event, CEO Robin Li said, "It has been significantly improved compared to the online version of Ernie bot and now it is not inferior to GPT-4."
Tech Market in China
As it competes in China's generative AI market with competitors like Tencent's Hunyuan and Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen, Baidu said at the end of December 2023 that Ernie bot had more than 100 million users, four months after its initial debut.
Meanwhile, ChatGPT achieved 100 million monthly active users just two months after launching in late November 2022.
After news broke that an agency overseeing cyberwarfare with ties to the People's Liberation Army had tested Baidu's AI system on Ernie, the stock price of the company took a nosedive at the start of the year. The story was rejected by Baidu, who said that they had not participated in any business collaboration with the organization. Shares of Baidu have fallen 7.53% so far this year.
With the development of better semiconductors, market research company International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts that by 2024, more AI capabilities will be included in personal devices like smartphones.
On the other hand, Samsung is clearly aiming to compete with Apple's latest iPhones by using AI technology. In terms of smartphone suppliers in China, it did not rank among the top five.
Based on shipment statistics released by IDC on Thursday, January 25, Apple dominated the Chinese smartphone market in 2023, accounting for 17.3% of the country's total. With a 16.8% market share, Honor ranked second, ahead of Vivo, Huawei, and Oppo.
