Many people don't know if someone is already lying to them. This could turn into nasty situations in the future. For example, if you're talking about a business partnership and your potential business partner is lying to you, then it could cost you financially.
Aside from business or finances, being lied to in romantic, friendly, or family relationships can also take a toll on you. Just imagine your partner telling you how much they love you only to know that they're lying.
Imagine if your friends are really talking behind your back, but are able to fool you like they're brothers from another mother. If you're tired of being lied to, here's what you can do.
How To Know If Someone Is Lying
The Guardian interviewed three experts who provided their tips on how to know if someone is lying. These are psychologist Dr. Linda Papadopoulus, ex-FBI agent Joe Navarro (the author of "What Every Body is Saying"), and fraud consultant Gabrielle Stewart.
Here's what they said:
- Mismatch: Dishonest people's actions usually don't match what they are saying (ex. Agreeing to investigators while moving their head sideways).
- Dissociation and Tenses: Most of the time, untruthful individuals tend to provide answers that are dissociated from the question.
- Random Sounds and Words: If someone is lying, they tend to create random sounds or say random words, which are usually time-filling.
- Self-Soothing Gestures: When people lie, they usually do self-soothing gestures. These include touching their necks, faces, shoulders, etc.
All these red-flags are connected to the discomfort of people when they're lying. But, you need to remember that these signs are not 100% correct since some individuals are just too good at being dishonest.

Other Tell-Tale Signs To Look Out For
Aside from the tell-tale signs mentioned above, Business Insider provided other red flags that people can look for if they want to know that the person they're talking to is not saying the truth
- When people lie, they usually provide very short answers to your questions.
- Since they provide short answers, dishonest people will do anything to avoid giving too many details; they will not provide the exact names, time, locations, etc.
- Experts said that what most people don't know is that liars fidget less, meaning that they are usually still to fake their confidence in confrontations.
- Another myth is that liars will look away. But, experts said that dishonest people usually look directly into the eyes of investigators, even if they are just thinking and not saying anything.
- Before answering, they will repeat the question to clarify things, which could be a hint of nervousness.
- If someone is lying, they commonly do actions repeatedly. These could include pressing their lips together, brushing their hair, cracking their knuckles, etc.
- When answering questions, most liars will start talking slowly and then speed up.
