"Wouldn't it be funny if in 50 years someone made a movie about Leonardo DiCaprio and the actor that played him won an Oscar," goes an Internet meme about the five-time Academy award-nominee, who yet again failed to win it.
DiCaprio's this year's Oscar race ended with Matthew McConaughey taking home the award for best actor. Not that McConaughey was bad as an AIDS-stricken fellow in 'Dallas Buyers Club' who is ostracized by his family and friends, but DiCaprio's rendition of ex-stockbroker Jordan Belfort in 'The Wolf of Wall Street' yet again showed that he can bring any character to life.
In a 20-year long career, the 39-year-old has received Oscar nominations for four films; 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape,' 'The Aviator,' 'Blood Diamond' and 'The Wolf of Wall Street.' A number far too less for an actor who blends in to the role of a brash money maker, a mentally-challenged teen brother and a passionate lover, with impeccable ease. He is as believable as a heady U.S. Marshal trying to get himself out of a trap as a man suffering from multiple personality disorder.
So, why does Oscar keeps snubbing DiCaprio? May be because he does not play the role of a famous person, says Salon. The Academy, the website says, chooses actors who portray the characters of historical figures such as Idi Amin, Uganda's third president that was played by Forest Whitaker in 'The Last King of Scotland,' or Ray Charles, known as the pioneer in the soul music genre, played by Jamie Foxx in 'Ray.'
During his interview with Gayle King of 'CBS This Morning' last month, DiCaprio spoke about his first Oscar nomination in1994's 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape.' "All I remember is being paralyzed with fear that I'd actually have to get up on that stage because somebody told me that a billion people watch that show. And that's the only thing I really remember. I was in a shambles about that. I actually didn't want to win because of that reason (he was 19 then)," DiCaprio said.
This year's Academy's decision not to give DiCaprio any award certainly disappointed fans worldwide who took to Twitter instantly.
However, DiCaprio graciously accepted his defeat and hugged McConaughey after the best actor winner was announced.
