In a report published by Reuters, the United States has begun conducting retaliatory strikes in Iraq according to officials within Syria.
These strikes are following the deadly strike in Jordan that killed 3 United States troops and injured 40 others. However, the strikes did not target locations within Iran itself.
The strikes are believed to be a multi-tiered response from President Biden's administration following weekend attacks that were carried out by militant groups that are backed by Iran. In addition, while the strikes did not hit Iran itself, they might add to rising concerns about tension within the Middle Eastern region as a result of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. At the time of writing, there have been many controversies surrounding how Israel has been handling the conflict from a rising civilian death toll, the displacement of citizens within Gaza, and even civilians being trapped in hospitals. The resulting cost of rebuilding the territory has been estimated to stand at a whopping $15 Billion. South Africa has also opened a genocide case against the state of Israel regarding the ongoing conflict.
Two of the officials provided a statement to Reuters on the grounds of remaining anonymous. They state that the strikes have targeted facilities in both Iraq and Syria that are linked to Iran's Revolutionary Guards and the militias they back. In addition to this, there has also been an ongoing conflict within the Red Sea with the Iranian-backed Houthi Rebel group that has been carrying out various strikes against cargo ships as a form of solidarity with those in Gaza.
