Michelle Obama Schedules Visit To China In March

The White House announced on Monday that first lady Michelle Obama will visit China later this month, POLITICO reported.

Obama will be joined by both daughters, Sasha and Malia, and her mother, Marian Robinson, on the trip scheduled for March 19 - 26.

The first lady will meet with Peng Liyuan, the wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping. According to POLITICO, Obama's plan to meet with Peng may be to make up for not traveling to California with President Obama last year, when Xi and his wife came to visit.

In a blog post on the White House website, Obama said she will visit one university and two high schools in Beijing and Chengdu. She added she will "be talking with students about their lives in China and telling them about America and the values and traditions we hold dear."

"I'll be focusing in particular on the power and importance of education, both in my own life and in the lives of young people in both of our countries," Obama added.

She will also update her travels on her blog and social media sites like Twitter and Instagram to share "the stories of the students I meet, as well as the interesting facts I learn about Chinese history and culture."

Additionally, the president will being doing some traveling of his own around the same time, with trips planned to the Netherlands, Belgium, the Vatican and Saudi Arabia that begin on March 24.
