As of press time, the topic "Messi's Mess" is already going viral on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. Among the people who are criticizing his no-show in the Hong Kong match is HK sports lawmaker Kenneth Fok.
He claims that Lionel Messi and his U.S. club Inter Miami are disrespecting fans in Hong Kong. Other critics also compared the behavior of the soccer star in Japan and Hong Kong, as reported by Time Magazine.
"Smiling in Japan but sulking in China, what can I say? He has picked a side and shown his politics. Don't come back again," said a Weibo user.
Aside from Weibo, Chinese users on X are also bashing Lionel Messi; claiming that the soccer superstar is quite energetic and looks fit while he's in Japan.
They added that his behavior in Hong Kong is very different since he didn't play and refused to participate in the handshake with the Hong Kong chief executive.
"Many Chinese fans bought high-priced tickets & went to HK specifically for Messi. They deserve a formal explanation & apology," argued a Chinese netizen.
