Scarlett Jenkinson's Case
Jenkinson and Ratcliffe, convicted for the "ferocious" murder of Brianna Ghey, a 16-year-old who was stabbed 28 times in a Cheshire park in February 2023, are now named as her killers after a judge lifted reporting restrictions.
The court ruling allows the reporting of more details, including Jenkinson's school transitions and her initial meeting with Brianna Ghey, who was transgender. The police were informed of an incident involving a cannabis-laced sweet at Culcheth High School in September 2022, where Jenkinson, then 15, was involved in spiking a 13-year-old victim.
The judge, during the sentencing hearing, described the murder as "exceptionally brutal" with elements of sadism by Jenkinson and transphobic hate by Ratcliffe. The judge noted that Jenkinson "enjoyed" the killing, driven by a "deep desire to kill," while Ratcliffe displayed "dehumanizing language." Both were sentenced, and Brianna Ghey's parents expressed their desire for them never to be released from prison.
Jenkinson had left her original school due to an incident involving cannabis-laced sweets. She joined Brianna Ghey's school, becoming "obsessed" with her. The court revealed that the duo had created a "kill list" targeting four youths and later added Brianna Ghey when she befriended Jenkinson.
During the trial, evidence emerged about their fascination with violence, torture, and murder, leading to the harrowing killing. A second "kill list" of staff caring for Jenkinson was found in her secure accommodation, according to BBC News.
Brianna Ghey's Murder
Both Jenkinson and Ratcliffe took pleasure in Brianna Ghey's vulnerability, which was brought to light by her dad. Jenkinson and Ratcliffe were referred to as "two predators stalking their prey."
The murder weapon, clothes that was smeared with blood, and a handwritten note that detailed the plot were discovered by the investigators at the residences of the perpetrators. Plans for other killings were disclosed in messages that were found on their phones, as well as a previous attempt to administer an overdose to Brianna Ghey.
The Crown Prosecution Service views Brianna Ghey's murder as a hate crime driven by transphobia. Senior Crown Prosecutor Nicola Wyn Williams hopes the sentence brings some closure, emphasizing the brutality of the crime.
