Rumors for the successor of Nintendo's flagship handheld model, the Switch 2, have slowly made their way to the public, including potential backward compatibility for games on the OG Switch as well as the use of a custom Nvidia chip.
The currently available Nintendo Switch is equipped with the Nvidia Tegra X1 chip a source claims that the successor of the handheld console will sport a custom-designed chip from the company.
Nintendo Switch 2 Rumors
It is also rumored that the Nintendo Switch 2, the final name not yet made public, will launch later this year and will feature an 8-inch LCD screen. This means that it would be bigger than the screens that come with the different Switch models.
The Switch OLED is equipped with a 7-inch OLED screen while the original model has a 6.2-inch LCD screen and the Lite version has a 5.5-inch screen. Previously, Kantan Games CEO Dr. Serkan Toto predicted that Nintendo would release the successor of its handheld console with an initial price tag of $400 this year, as per VGChartz.
Furthermore, Toto claimed that the Switch 2's games will cost players roughly $70, which is higher than the current model's game prices. He said that the time has finally come for a Switch successor to be released to the public.
On top of using a custom Nvidia chip, the Switch 2 is also rumored to have a backward compatibility feature to allow players to use their old physical and digital game copies. The report of the rumor was published by Universo Nintendo, which has a credible history of being accurate about potential information about the company.
The Twitter account of Centro Leaks shared a translated version of the details across social media. They claim that original Nintendo Switch games will be playable on the gaming company's latest console, whether they are in cartridge or digital form.
Backward Game Compatibility
Furthermore, developers are rumored to be able to "enhance" games that were released on the OG Nintendo Switch to take advantage of the new console's more powerful processor. This rumor lines up with previous reports that the gaming company was showing a "souped-up" version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild running on the new hardware, according to GamesRadar.
The console's successor has been at the center of a rumor whirlwind for the past few months. One industry survey also showed that 8% of game developers were already working on titles for the Switch 2.
Nothing can be said for certain until Nintendo itself decides to release details of its new console that could be coming out this year. But with so many rumors swirling around, it is clear that the company is planning something substantial for its newest release.
The new rumors come as reputable leaker Nate the Hate hinted last year that the Nintendo Switch successor would support NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 AI-powered Ray Reconstruction. This would allow for improved ray tracing and bring the console on par with current-generation consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, said GameRant.
