Oklahoma State continues to improve with the return of sophomore guard Marcus Smart. The Cowboys (19-10) ended their seven-game losing streak on Feb. 22 against Texas Tech, Smart's first game back after serving a three-game suspension. Since his return to the lineup, Oklahoma State has won three straight games, including a 72-65 win on Saturday against No. 8 Kansas.
"I'm very proud of the guys and the perseverance they showed," Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford told the school website. "When we got down 10, I didn't feel too bad -- I felt bad down 17 at half in Lawrence. I felt like we had a run in us. We were changing defenses and match-ups a lot. ...
"We got them to turn it over and we were able to turn that to dunks at the other end, which energized us and got the fans going. We had such an incredible crowd. It's a great win against a great basketball team, who had a chance to clinch the regular season title outright. We talked about not letting it happen on our court."
Although Smart had a difficult time against Kansas' defense, he ultimately finished the game with 21 points, six rebounds and five assists.
"Marcus struggled a lot, but then he made a lot of big plays," said Ford. "After the game, I told him he's a piece of work. You have to stick with him, because he's going to make plays. He's a competitor."
Kansas State (20-9), meanwhile, heads into Stillwater looking for their third straight win. The unranked Wildcats are coming off a 80-73 upset win on Saturday against No. 16 Iowa State. Senior guard Shane Southwell, one of five Wildcats to score in the double-digits, went 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and a scored a team-high 13 points off the bench.
