Student Loan Forgiveness 2024: Biden Cancels $1.2 Billion Debt—Here's Who's Eligible!

Who is eligible for the relief?

Probably 153,000 student loan borrowers who are now enrolled in a new repayment plan implemented by the Biden administration will receive an email on Wednesday informing them that their remaining federal student loan debt will be canceled, amounting to around $1.2 billion.

The email will probably include a congratulatory message from President Joe Biden, with his administration keen on emphasizing their efforts to deal with student loan debt as the presidential election approaches, as per CNN.

$1.2 Billion in Student Loan Forgiveness

President Biden's administration has accelerated the implementation of the Student Aid and Relief (SAVE) program, ushering in an earlier-than-anticipated relief for borrowers. Biden, speaking from a local library before embarking on campaign-related events, emphasized the pressing need to alleviate the financial strain on Americans burdened with what he described as "unsustainable debt in exchange for a college degree."

The SAVE program, praised by the White House as a crucial move for economic recovery, involved the administration sending email notifications to eligible borrowers on Wednesday. The program was initially set to start in July but was moved up almost six months earlier, providing quick help to those dealing with student loan responsibilities.

The SAVE student loan repayment plan's first round of debt cancellations was announced by President Biden on social media on Wednesday. Individuals who have faithfully paid off their loans for ten years and borrowed $12,000 or less will benefit from this first round, which includes 150,000 Americans.

The inaugural round of forgiveness from the SAVE plan is poised to absolve a substantial $1.2 billion in loans, providing substantial relief to the recipients. Those eligible for loan cancellation will receive personalized email notifications from President Biden, confirming their qualification for early loan forgiveness under the SAVE Plan, according to AP News.

Biden's Student Loan Relief

In his message to borrowers, President Biden said he has received messages from many borrowers saying that eliminating their student loan debt would allow them to support themselves and their families, buy homes, start small businesses, and resume life plans. Over 7.5 million people joined the SAVE repayment plan, demonstrating its popularity.

During a speech, President Biden acknowledged the life-changing impact of the relief on individuals and their families. He expressed pride in providing borrowers with the earned relief, asking the audience how many had already benefited from debt forgiveness, with many raising their hands.

The president pledged to help middle-class Americans at a Beverly Hills campaign ceremony. He warned against a Trump victory, citing a countrywide abortion prohibition, Republican efforts to attack the Biden administration's health care program, and policies favoring the rich. Biden stressed "finishing the job" to advance an agenda for American workers by urging supporters to win a second term.

While attending additional campaign events and fundraisers, including a stop at CJ's Cafe, President Biden continued to engage with the public, offering handshakes and hugs, and posing for selfies.

Those who borrowed $12,000 or less for education and have paid on time for 10 years are eligible for debt cancellation under SAVE. For borrowers above $12,000, the cancellation window extends dependent on the borrowed amount. President Biden's multi-pronged approach to student loan reform, including the SAVE program and a plan to cancel up to $20,000 in debts, shows his dedication to negotiating legal issues and finding answers to student loan debt, The News Tribune reported.
