Palestinian PM Mohammed Shtayyeh Submits Cabinet's Resignation

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has yet to accept or reject Shtayyeh and his cabinet’s resignation.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh said on Monday (Feb. 26) that his government intended to resign, which could open the door to US-backed reforms in the Palestinian Authority, the Associated Press reported.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas must still decide whether to accept Shtayyeh and his government's resignation, but the move signaled a willingness by the Western-backed Palestinian leadership to accept a shake-up that might usher in reforms seen as necessary to revitalize the Palestinian Authority.

The US wanted a reformed Palestinian Authority to govern Gaza once the war between Israel and Hamas was over. However, many obstacles remain to making such a vision a reality.
