Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was allegedly on the verge of being freed through a prisoner swap with the West before his untimely death, according to claims made by his associates.
Maria Pevchikh, a close aide residing outside Russia, asserted in a video statement posted on social media that negotiations for Navalny's release were in their "final stages" just a day before his reported death on February 16.
Alexei Navalny's Team Claims Potential Prisoner Swap Before His Death
Pevchikh's assertion, echoed by other members of Navalny's team on social media, suggests that Navalny's release was contingent on a prisoner exchange involving him and two unnamed U.S. citizens in custody in Russia. The proposed swap was said to include Vadim Krasikov, a Russian serving a life sentence in Germany for a high-profile murder in Berlin in 2019.
Navalny's alleged involvement in this potential exchange was not independently confirmed, and Pevchikh did not provide concrete evidence to support her claims. However, she emphasized the seriousness of the negotiations.
"Alexei Navalny could have been sitting here now, today. It's not a figure of speech," Pevchikh said.
According to Pevchikh, the exchange deal was structured to involve the release of Navalny and the two American citizens in return for Krasikov. Notably, German authorities have remained tight-lipped regarding any potential efforts by Russia to secure Krasikov's release.
While Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously expressed openness to negotiations regarding the release of the detained US citizens, the Kremlin has not officially commented on the specific claims made by Navalny's associates.

Western Official: Freedom Talks Were at 'Early Stage'
A Western official confirmed that Navalny's name had been mentioned in talks regarding a potential swap, but clarified that these discussions were at an early stage.
Navalny's sudden death has sparked international outcry and renewed scrutiny of the Russian government's treatment of political dissidents. The circumstances surrounding his demise, as well as the alleged prisoner swap negotiations, continue to raise significant questions about the Kremlin's actions and intentions regarding Navalny and other detainees.
Navalny, 47, was a prominent critic of President Putin's administration, known for his anti-corruption activism and his opposition to the ruling regime. His imprisonment, which began in January 2021 upon his return to Russia from Germany where he was recovering from a nerve agent poisoning, drew condemnation from Western nations and human rights organizations.
Throughout his incarceration, Navalny maintained his innocence, dismissing the charges against him as politically motivated. His supporters viewed him as a symbol of resistance against Putin's authoritarian rule and rallied behind him in protests both within Russia and internationally.
Navalny's death in custody has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of political dissidents in Russia. The circumstances surrounding his demise, including reports of medical neglect and inadequate access to medical treatment, have led to accusations of negligence on the part of Russian authorities.
The Kremlin has denied any involvement in Navalny's death and has dismissed allegations of foul play as unfounded. Russian officials have maintained that Navalny received adequate medical care while in custody and have attributed his death to natural causes.
However, Navalny's associates and international observers have called for a thorough and transparent investigation into his death. They have urged Russian authorities to allow an independent inquiry to determine the cause of death and to hold those responsible accountable.
Navalny's death has further strained relations between Russia and Western countries, which have imposed sanctions on Russian officials and entities in response to his imprisonment and subsequent death.
The United States, the European Union, and other Western nations have condemned Navalny's treatment and have called for justice to be served.
As Navalny's supporters continue to mourn his loss and demand accountability, the questions surrounding his death and the alleged prisoner swap negotiations remain unresolved. The search for truth and justice in Navalny's case underscores the ongoing struggle for democracy and human rights in Russia.
