Donald J Trump posted a bond of $91.6 million as he appeals a judgment against him in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case. The bond was underwritten by Chub insurance company, which was signed by the former president on Tuesday.
Under the terms of the bond, Chubb will only secure the appeal of the $83.3 million judgment, not any future appeals. The bond of $91.6 million is greater than the judgment because the district court requires a party to post 110% of the bond in most cases.
Additionally, Donald Trump faces a deadline of March 25 to put up another $454 million in the New York attorney general's civil fraud case.
Trump's legal team has argued that the jury award is excessive and should be reduced. Carroll's attorneys told the jury that Trump should be punished with a large number in damages during the trial in order to get him to stop defamatory behavior.
Trump also faces a March 25 deadline to put up another $454 million in the New York attorney general's civil fraud case. Additionally, Trump is also facing legal fees he owes on the four criminal trials he's facing as he campaigns for another presidential term.
The notice of the bond and appeal were made with the federal court in New York on Friday.
In January, a federal jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million in damages for defamatory statements made by Trump where he denied sexually assaulting her.
He said she wasn't his type and that she made up the story to sell his book, among other comments against her.
