Lara Trump, the new co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), issued a warning of prosecution for anyone found "cheating in an election."
Her remarks on social media on Sunday included talks about the priorities that she said the committee should take on. These include "protecting the vote," noting that the RNC has an election integrity division underway.
Protecting the Vote
The new RNC co-chair is married to former United States President Donald Trump's second son, Eric Trump. During the interview, she said that they need to make sure that when people go to vote, they should feel like their vote counts.
She argued that they cannot let something like what happened in 2020 happen again as well as the questions surrounding the election. Lara said that anyone who was thinking of cheating in an election would become their target, noting that they would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, according to Newsweek.
Lara was speaking with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on Sunday and she pointed to Attorney General Merrick Garland's comments made earlier this month. The latter said that the Department of Justice (DOJ) will challenge states that are implementing what he called "discriminatory, burdensome, and unnecessary restrictions on access to the ballot."
The new RNC co-chair said that the committee has three pillars that they need to focus on. The first is to emerge victorious in the Nov. 5, 2024, election. The second is to protect the vote while the third is to raise money.
Trump and his allies have repeatedly claimed that there was voter fraud in the 2020 election, adding that the race was stolen from him. However, there was no widespread evidence of any sort of fraud during that particular election.
Lara also noted that they currently have 78 lawsuits out in 23 states across the nation that would make it easier to vote and harder to cheat. She added that every person in the United States, whether they are Democratic or Republican, should wish for free, fair, and transparent elections, said The Hill.
Lara Trump's Comments
The new RNC co-chair's comments come after she previously said that the committee needs to raise $500 million for the 2024 general election. Additionally, Lara did not rule out using the money to pay for her father-in-law's mounting legal fees.
She issued a warning that the Democratic Party was flush with cash, saying that the GOP needed a lot of funds to help the former president's re-election campaign. Her remarks were made at Trump's campaign headquarters in North Charleston.
Lara also sought to rally supporters ahead of South Carolina's Republican primary, which was held on Saturday. The former president is currently the frontrunner to become the Republican Party's presidential nominee. He could face off against President Joe Biden in the November general election.
The new RNC co-chair added that they need to make sure that people understand when they donate their money to the committee, it would be going to causes that they care about. The RNC is seen to be having a slow start this election cycle as it raised roughly $890 million during the 2020 race, according to Reuters.
