Carvel’s Non-Dairy Ice Cream Lands NYC Toddler in ER, Reports Claim

The boy started throwing up shortly after eating the treat

A New York City mother says a non-dairy ice cream treat almost killed her 3-year-old son because it was potentially cross-contaminated.

Saira Weitz says she took her son Jesse, who has several dairy allergies, to a Carvel shop near their Brooklyn home because it was promoting an ice cream made out of oat milk.

Weitz says she told employees her son had a dairy allergy and asked about cross-contamination, WCBS-AM reported.

She says they told her it was fine but shortly after starting to eat, her toddler began to vomit and show other symptoms of a severe allergic reaction.

"He profusely started vomiting," Weitz told WCBS-AM. "And, again, he only had less than a spoonful of this ice cream. So my husband rushes over, he gets the EpiPen."

They live near an emergency room so they rushed him there and he was stabilized. The boy is now home and doing better.

The family is considering suing.

"At Carvel, the safety and wellbeing of our guests is our top priority," Carvel said in a statement to WNYW-TV. "We are investigating this incident to determine what happened, and we express our sincerest sympathies to the Weitz Family as their son continues to recover."
